This past weekend Road America hosted the 50th Anniversary of the SCCA Runoffs. 70 Spec Miata’s entered the race, making it the largest ever race group in the 50 year history of the Runoffs.
Danny Steyn, one of the pre-race favorites had the misfortune of losing 3rd gear in the prime qualifying session where 15 driver bettered the previous lap record. Unfortunately rain prevented Steyn from improving in the Q2 session, but in the final Q3 session, held in hot humid conditions, Steyn was able to move up to the 26th spot on the grid.
Typical of his never give up attitude, Danny Steyn made a massive charge up through the field and powered his Rossini powered Spec Miata to a 3rd place and podium finish from a 26th place start on the grid.
Other Rossini drivers had mixed fortunes. Chip Van Vurst, qualified back in 50th and managed to come through the field to finish 17th. Chips Brother Matthew, along with SRF National Champion Brian Schofield, both got caught up in the T7 carnage and never completed a lap.
